If you would like to make sure that you, nor anyone else in your home is locked outside again without a way back in, you will want to find a safe place to hide a spare key. To help you with this, you will want to take a few minutes to review the following tips on places you can hide your spare house key.
Under The Rock
You will have to get a little more creative than simply sliding a key under a rock. After all, you do not want to lose the key or cause it to become rusted. Instead, you will want to place it in an empty prescription medication bottle and then tightly close its lid. Find a small flat rock and glue the bottom of it to the top of the medication bottle. You will probably need to use industrial strength glue in order to make sure that everything stays together.
You will then need to dig out a hole in your flower garden so that the medication bottle will slide right in. Just make sure that you are only pushing the bottle in just enough so that the rock will sit nicely on top of the soil. If you have a lot of rocks in your flower garden, you might need to mark the rock that hides the key by painting it or gluing glass beads to the top of the rock as a decoration.
Under A False Bottom In Your Mailbox
This will generally work the best for mailboxes that are attached to the homes instead of the ones that sit out by the road. Measure the bottom of the interior of your mailbox. Cut a piece of sheet metal so that it is just slightly smaller in width and length. This way, you will be able to grab on to the lip of the false bottom to pull it up. Just make sure that you are sanding the sides of the false bottom so that you will not have to worry about cutting your fingers when you go to remove it. Once you have it ready, you can place your single spare key in the bottom of the mailbox and then place the false bottom over top of it.
With those two places in mind, you should have a much easier time finding the perfect spot for your spare house key. This way, you and your loved ones will never be stuck outside again. For more information about key storage and locksmith services, contact a company like LI Locksmiths Inc.
